The present study was aimed to clarify a desirable occlusion of the deciduous
dentition by evaluating the relationship among cephalometric, cast model and
electromyographic analyses on tonic neck reflex. The subjects examined were fifty
children (20 males and 30 females) with deciduous dentition from 3.5 to 6.7 years of age
and without dental caries and any mandibular functional disorder.
The following results were obtained:
1. In the electromyogram of masticatory muscles on tonic neck reflex during dorsal
flexion, 20 children were classified as unbalanced type showing the difference between
right and left side muscles and 30 children as balanced type showing no bilateral
difference.
2. Unbalanced type showed greater values than balanced type in terms of overbite,
overjet, and vertical overlapping of deciduous canine, and lower values than balanced
type in terms of the ratio of the lower to the upper arch length.
3. Ho difference was noted between two types in terms of terminal plane, occlusal
wear and sagittal relationship of deciduous canine.
4. In the angular measurement of cephalometric analysis, ANB angle showing the
anteroposterior relationship of maxillomandibular basal bone was greater in unbalanced
type than that of balanced type.
5. In the linear ineasurelnent, the mandibular length of unbalalanced type was shorter
than that of balanced type.
